The importance of tactile perception is aroused, from the conception and the design of a product. This remark integrates Mr. Le Quement thoughts. Director of the Design group of Renault, he creates the Touch Design philosophy. It is based on the fact that, a complex and rich concept should lead to a simple and intuitive product. In order to understand a product, the first sense solicited is the visual one's. It may arouses desire in touching the item. Once in the hand or in contact with a body part, the item function should be intuitively understood. An external reference frame is a tool that translates complex processes into a simple and easy use.
Hand has a remarkable sensitivity and remains the most outstanding tool to measure tactile perceptions. In parallel, an instrumental approach has been developed on the Sensotact base. It gives a sensory reality to the physics measure that is linked. The instrument is mainly used when the panel is overloaded. More especially, when lots of material need to be evaluated for a quality control the instrument is rather used.
Choices criteria between sensory approach and instrumental process
Implementation
A tactile reference frame must propose a decomposition of the "global" sense of touch in 3 different movements. Each movement can be translated into simple perceptions : 4 characterizing orthogonal movements, 5 characterizing tangential movements and 1 quantifying thermal perceptions.
